Multiple deaths reported in state from tornado

May 17, 2025

Friday, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency as a dangerous weather system moved through the state Friday afternoon through Friday night.

Saturday morning, the governor said, " Kentucky, we’re starting today with the tough news that we lost at least 14 of our people to last night’s storms, but sadly, this number is expected to grow as we receive more information. Please pray for all of our affected families."

Media outlets were reporting there was significant tornado damage in the Somerset area and London, Ky.  Friday's severe weather was described as "a mass casualty event" as media were reporting multiple deaths in London, severe injuries for numerous others and a number of homes destroyed.

The London Kentucky Police Dept. shared this morning "Emergency Personnel are out searching and responding to the damage. However, emergency crews are having trouble getting to these areas due to a large amount of bystanders driving on the road.

We ask that unless it’s an emergency, please stay home. Emergency personnel are working diligently to respond to every call and need."

The Somerset Fire Dept. shared
"THE SOUTHERN SIDE OF THE CITY HAS BEEN HIT BY A POSSIBLE TORNADO! CREWS ARE RESPONDING TO WEATHER DAMAGE IN THE STOPLIGHT 22 AREA AS WELL AS PARKERS MILL ROAD!!
PLEASE AVOID THE AREA, POLES AND POWER LINES ARE DOWN!!!!"

The Governor took action ahead of the storm by activating the Kentucky Emergency Operations Center, and units of the Kentucky National Guard. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials and crews were also on alert, and local emergency management.

The gov. also implemented the state's price gouging laws.
