Lowell Gene King, 76
January 02, 2025
Lowell Gene King, 76, a devoted educator, proud veteran, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2024, in Louisville.
Born Aug. 10, 1948, in Kite, he was the son of the late Everage and Sadie King. His life journey was marked by his unwavering commitment to education, community, and the joy of friendship. He earned a rank one in education and dedicated many years to Montgomery County High School, where he served as both a teacher and an athletic director. His passion for empowering young minds extended beyond the classroom, as he also took on the role of director for the Mt. Sterling Montgomery County Parks and Recreation, contributing to the growth of recreational opportunities within the community. A proud U.S. Army veteran who served in Germany, he carried his love for sports throughout his life, playing collegiate basketball at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., where he made a lifelong friendship with Jimmy Harris. Later, he found joy on the golf course, often spending several days a week with friends, forging bonds that would last a lifetime. Though he and his beloved companion, Robbin did not have children of their own, their greatest joys came from their godchildren, Alexis Feltner Spaulding and her children, Shepherd and Hayes, and Pierce Feltner, whom they loved dearly and participated in their lives as they grew into remarkable adults. He also treasured a lifelong friendship with Jake Hartgrove, a bond that began in childhood when the Kings moved to Montgomery County from Knott County. Together with countless other friends whose lives he touched, his warm spirit created an extensive network of cherished connections. A man of deep faith, he was baptized at Antioch Christian Church alongside his brother, Doyle. He also attended Southeast Christian Church later in life when he moved to Louisville. In his final days, he expressed his gratitude for the countless messages, texts, and phone calls from friends, that brought him immense joy. It was a testament to the love he cultivated, a reminder of the deep impact he had on those around him.
Survivors include his beloved companion and caregiver, Robbin King; brother, Doyle King; sister, Eva Amburgey; five nieces and nephews; goddaughter, Alexis Feltner Spaulding (Troy); godson, Pierce Feltner (Carolyn), and a community of friends and loved ones who will forever hold his memory dear.
Service will be held later, with details to be announced. The family invites all those who knew and loved him to come together in celebration of a life well-lived, reflecting on the friendships, laughter, and love he shared.
