| Adult Education Center moves to new location |

The Montgomery County Adult Education Skills U Center is settling in to its new location at 640 Woodford Drive.
The center was open for its first week at the former location of the Montgomery County Board of Education last week. The board moved its offices to the Clay Community Center, where the center was previously located.
“Now we’re in, and we’re settled,” Jean Rose, an instructor with the center, said.
The center plans to host an open house from 1-6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, for the community to tour its new facility and learn about the free services that are offered there.
The center now has space for two classrooms, a study room and a computer lab, in addition to offices for the staff.
Compared to its former open classroom setup, the new space will allow the students to study, test, learn or be advised in designated areas so as not to distract other students and to have privacy, Rose said. Now, the center can accomplish more at once with its students, she added.
The goal of the center is to help students of all ages seek their next steps in their education or careers and offer access to several free services and one-on-one attention to help them achieve their goals.
Free services include earning a GED high school equivalency diploma, preparation for college entrance exams and certification programs, college and career counseling, English language and literacy/English as a second language courses and employability and job-related certifications, such as the Kentucky Essential Skills Certificate (KESC), Kentucky Career Readiness Certificate (KCRC) and the National Career Readiness Certificate.
A recent addition to the center’s programs is GED Plus, which allows students to earn their GED plus a college credential at the same time. Students earn a tuition free college credential through the Word Ready Kentucky Scholarship Program in areas such as health care, advanced manufacturing, transportation/logistics, business services/IT and construction/trades.
Resume writing, mock interview exercises and local employment connections are also offered for students who want to go into the workforce after getting their GED.
Staff at the center visit local factories, rehabilitation centers, college campuses and other locations to help bring the services to the community.
A counseling coordinator of the Commonwealth Educational Opportunity Center also travels across the area to meet with adults about furthering their education, career counseling and financial aid and admissions.
The coordinator can also offer vouchers to help alleviate the cost of GED testing, and the center can provide other financial assistance for the GED test.
