Spring sports season under way

3/22/2019

By Dan Manley

The 2019 high school spring sports season is officially under way.
Montgomery County teams have already participated in baseball, softball, along with boys’ and girls’ tennis.

Coach Chris Varney’s baseball squad had a rough opener, falling 12-1 at Bobby Joe Whitaker Field to fourth-ranked Madison Central.

“I don’t like the outcome but that doesn’t really concern me,” Varney said. “They’re ranked No. 4 for a reason and we’ve just got to get some games under our belt and more practice time.”

Varney said one of the major bright spots was the return of Ty Eads who sat out last year with a shoulder injury.

“Ty will really help us at the plate and in the outfield.”

He will team with twin brother Jay, along with junior Ty Jacobs, when he’s not on the mound, to give the Indians a solid and veteran outfield.

“Braxton Hundley was really good behind the plate for us and there were some other bright spots,” Varney said.

The Indians do have a much larger squad than a year ago with a large number of freshmen on the team.

The Tribe was scheduled to play at Estill County Wednesday and then host Morgan County at 5:30 p.m. at Bobby Joe Whitaker Field.

Montgomery County will host a pair of 40th District games next week at Bobby Joe Whitaker Field. The Paris Greyhounds will be here Monday with Clark County visiting on Thursday.

Coming up a week from Saturday the Indians will host a triangular event with Campbell County and Lewis County. The Indians and Lewis County will play at 11 a.m. with Campbell County and Lewis County meeting at 2 p.m. and Montgomery County and Campbell County, the defending 10th Region champion, playing at 5 p.m.
